Are you a DOT compliance company? Create provider profile →

A mock DOT audit is a private compliance review intended to identify problems before an official FMCSA audit or investigation. Depending on the carrier and agreed scope, a provider may review driver qualification records, hours of service, drug and alcohol testing, vehicle inspection and maintenance records, accident records and other applicable FMCSRs. Providers may work remotely or onsite with carriers across Nevada.

A young, for-hire carrier base

Our carrier directory lists about 10,610 motor carrier records with a Nevada address, including about 2,020 that first registered with FMCSA in 2025 or later. About 7,810 are for-hire carriers and about 5,460 are marked interstate.

A newly operating interstate carrier normally goes through FMCSA’s New Entrant Safety Assurance Program, with a Safety Audit conducted within the first 12 months after operations begin. Certain violations identified during that audit can result in automatic failure. The FMCSA rules on new entrants and safety fitness are set out in 49 CFR Part 385). A mock audit can identify issues such as missing required drug tests, an inadequate random testing program, incomplete driver qualification records or missing vehicle inspection documentation before the official audit occurs.

I-15, I-80 and long-distance operations

Nevada carriers operate along I-15, I-80 and other long-distance western routes. Construction materials, machinery, motor vehicles and metal are among the cargo types recorded in the Nevada directory, and about 830 Nevada records list hazmat operations.

For carriers running long routes, a useful mock audit can examine records that commonly receive regulatory scrutiny:

  • ELD and records-of-duty-status compliance under Part 395
  • Supporting documents used to verify hours-of-service records where applicable
  • Roadside inspection reports and documentation of required repairs
  • Periodic inspection and maintenance records under Part 396
  • Hazmat records where they are within the provider’s agreed scope

The review should be based on the rules applicable to the carrier rather than assumptions about a particular route or cargo.

Preparing for a Nevada provider

Have your USDOT information, driver roster, DQ files, recent hours-of-service records, drug and alcohol testing records, maintenance files and accident register available. Operating authority, financial responsibility and other records may also be relevant depending on the operation and the scope of the review. Ask the provider:

  • Is the review remote, onsite, or available both ways?
  • How many driver, vehicle and log records will you sample?
  • Will you review hazmat compliance if it applies to our operation?
  • Will each finding identify the applicable regulation and required corrective action?

A mock audit does not produce an FMCSA safety rating and does not replace an official Safety Audit or compliance investigation. Southern Nevada carriers can compare mock DOT audit help in Las Vegas. DOT compliance questions for Nevada

I started my trucking company this year. When should I get a mock audit?

Once you have enough operating records to review, a mock audit can identify compliance gaps while there is still time to correct them before a New Entrant Safety Audit or other FMCSA review.

Can a provider in Las Vegas serve my operation in Elko or Reno?

Often, yes. Many compliance reviews can be performed remotely from electronic records. Confirm directly whether onsite work is available if you need someone at your terminal.

Will a mock audit tell me my safety rating?

No. A private provider can give you findings and corrective recommendations, but it cannot issue an official FMCSA safety rating.

How long does it take?

It depends on fleet size, the records being sampled, the condition of the files and whether the review is remote or onsite. Confirm the expected scope and turnaround with the provider before starting.
