What is UCR in trucking?
Unified Carrier Registration is an annual registration and fee program for covered businesses involved in interstate or international transportation. It applies to motor carriers and certain other businesses, including brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies.
Your business type and operations determine whether you need to register. An owner-operator with one truck is not automatically exempt. A truck that stays within one state can still carry freight that is part of an interstate shipment.

2027 registration is open
Registration for 2027 opened on October 1, 2026. Enforcement begins January 1, 2027. The 2027 registration fee for the 0 to 2 vehicle bracket is $55 per entity.

Filing yourself or asking for help
You can file directly through the official UCR registration portal. If you need help, tell us your USDOT number, the registration year and what you need assistance with. If you are unsure which vehicles count, include that in your request.
The published UCR fee is the registration charge. It is separate from any fee for assistance with a filing.
Questions about registration
Does UCR renew automatically with my USDOT record?
UCR is a separate annual registration. Updating an FMCSA record is not the same as completing the UCR filing for that year.

What to confirm before hiring a provider
Before appointing a provider, confirm the work required, the records or information the provider will need, who will perform each part of the service, and what documentation will be returned when the work is complete. Check relevant credentials, service area, agency or program experience, record-handling procedures and any carrier actions that must be completed separately. A provider can assist with the service, but the motor carrier and other regulated parties remain responsible for duties that cannot be transferred.
