Owner-Operator DOT Compliance Help

Find compliance providers for owner-operators. Clarify own-authority or leased-on responsibilities, driver records, testing, permits and the support needed.

An owner-operator often has to fit compliance work around driving, maintenance and finding the next load. The useful starting point is the operating arrangement: are you running under your own authority or leased to another motor carrier? That distinction helps identify who holds the records and administers the employer’s programs.

Separate the driver’s job from the carrier’s duties

Give a provider the actual vehicle and trailer details, routes, cargo and authority arrangement. Ask which driver qualification, medical, hours-of-service, maintenance and registration requirements apply to that work. A small vehicle count does not make every carrier obligation disappear, and simply holding a CDL does not determine every testing requirement.

A covered self-employed owner-operator working under their own authority must participate in a consortium random testing pool and designate a C/TPA in the Clearinghouse. If you drive under another carrier’s program, confirm the arrangements with that carrier rather than buying an overlapping package on assumption.

Buy help for a defined task

You may need a first-time setup, a review of existing files, help with a notice or someone to manage a recurring deadline. Ask what the price includes, which records you must provide and what remains your responsibility. Keep access to official accounts and request copies of submissions and completed records.

The results below identify providers whose profiles say they support owner-operators. Confirm that they handle your vehicle, states and immediate issue; directory membership does not establish that every listed service applies to you.

Read the consortium guide and driver qualification guidance. FMCSA’s Clearinghouse guidance for owner-operators explains the account roles.

Owner-Operator DOT Compliance Help: common questions

Are my responsibilities different when I am leased to a carrier?

They can be. Confirm which carrier is responsible for the operation, which employer program covers the driving and how records are shared. A lease should not be treated as a reason to assume every duty has been handled.

Do I need a consortium if I am the only driver?

A covered self-employed owner-operator working under their own authority must participate in a consortium random testing pool. Testing coverage depends on the driving operation, not simply the number of drivers.

Can I buy help with one problem instead of an annual package?

Some providers offer a specific filing, file review or consultation. State the task and deadline, then ask for the scope and fee before deciding whether ongoing support is needed.

Does paying a consultant transfer my carrier responsibilities?

No. A provider can perform agreed work and help manage records, but the carrier remains responsible for its applicable operating duties.
