Decode a single 17-character VIN, or switch to fleet mode and decode up to 10 at once. Each result maps the vehicle against the federal DOT and CDL weight thresholds it can trigger.
What a VIN decode can and cannot confirm
vPIC can identify vehicle characteristics reported by manufacturers, including vehicle type and gross vehicle weight rating class when available. It does not confirm current registration, operating authority, ownership, mechanical condition or whether a particular operation is compliant. Ratings on the vehicle certification label control.
A vehicle or combination at or above this rating in interstate commerce generally brings the operation under the federal motor carrier safety regulations.
Single vehicles or combinations at or above this rating generally require a CDL, along with certain passenger and hazmat vehicles at any weight.
A tractor VIN alone cannot decide CDL class. Combination ratings, towed-unit ratings and actual weights all matter.
